Getting up close and personal at the Canberra Reptile Zoo

We Gungahlinites are super lucky. We have one of the largest collection of native animals in Australia just down the road at Gold Creek’s Canberra Reptile Zoo. You can get up close and personal with a host of creepy crawlies including over 50 different species of reptiles and frogs. When we say close we mean REALLY close!

While most people get the heebie jeebies at the thought of petting a snake, the zoo staff aim debunk the idea that some of our slitheriest animals are not so lovable. For the faint at heart there are also less challenging options, such as patting the cutest sugar gliders you will ever see. In fact the collection extends out of the reptile realm, with owls, stonefish and tawny frogmouths (and who knows what on the horizon). Many of these animals form part of “Venomous Australia” and will be featured until the end of February.

Given it is summer, and we have been having the most ridiculous heatwave ever, this air conditioned all weather activity is perfect for the school holidays. On the nicer days you can even have a barbeque, or bring food from the neighbouring Cafe Enjoy, to enjoy the playground facilities. The kids can climb giant animal statues, or dig for the dinosaur skeleton in the playground. There is also a staging area, with regular shows throughout the day where the staff educate the young and old as well as letting you get even closer to some of the animals.

The owner Peter Child is passionate about conservation through education and the business is actually run as a not-for-profit. If you happen to find something slithering in your yard you can give them a call and they will relocate the animal to a more spacious, people free home. They also provide all the bits you need to establish your own enclosures, if you are so inclined. This is a one-stop shop for all things reptile!

The Canberra Reptile zoo can be visited 7 days a week and is available for barbeques and parties. Mobile Education displays are also available for your next event. Entry to the zoo starts at $10. Tours and live hands-on reptile shows start from $10 per child. Large groups discounts are available for up to 100 children.
